Dia de Muertos / Day of the Dead

A Centuries Old Tradition:

Día de Muertos/Day of the Dead is celebrated in Mexico and parts of the United States on or around November 1st. On this holiday, people remember and honor their deceased loved ones.

It is a festive and colorful holiday celebrating the lives of those who have passed on. People visit cemeteries to decorate the graves and to be in the presence of their deceased friends and family members. They also create Ofrendas in their homes in honor of those who have passed.

The day is a unique aspect of Mexican culture passed down through generations, beginning well before the arrival of Europeans.

UNESCO named the celebration as part of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2008.

Sonya & Daniela

Created by Sonya and Daniela, this ofrenda is a heartfelt tribute to their beloved fathers and Madden, Sonya’s loyal dog. Each photo, candle, and offering represents the love, laughter, and memories they shared together. The marigolds guide their spirits home, the food and favorite treats remind them of the comfort of family, and the light of the candles keeps their memory shining bright. Though their dads and Madden are no longer with them, their presence continues to fill Sonya and Daniela’s hearts with warmth, strength, and love.

--

Alex & Paola Moorer

In honor of our beloved grandparents, who taught us the meaning of unconditional love, patience, and resilience.

Grandma Libo (Paola’s grandmother): My grandma Libo was a very funny and wise person. She loved having her cup of coffee or hot chocolate and eating sweet bread. She passed away when she was 102 years old and gave us a great example of how to live life.

Grandpa Bob (Alex’s grandfather): My grandpa loved all sports, especially football and golf. He was a fan of Florida State University and was always talking about sports. He taught me what true love is. He and my grandma were one and the same.

Grandma Elpidia (Paola’s grandmother): My grandma Pilla was a person with a very strong character. She was very strict but also spoiled me — and all her grandchildren and children — a lot. I remember that every time I went to visit her, I would go with her to get dough for tortillas, and she would make me handmade tortillas in my favorite colors.

We love and miss our grandparents very much and sincerely hope that they can visit us this Day of the Dead.

--
