Latitudes in Afro-Latinx Art Exhibit

Casa Azul of Greensboro brings to our community its 2023 Art Series highlighting afro-Latinx art and culture and drawing attention to the African influence in Latin America and Latino art and culture. For this year’s series Casa Azul of Greensboro is once again partnering with the African American Atelier to bring its series: LATITUDES in Afro-Latinx Art from September 15th to October 28th, 2023. The exhibit will take place at The African American Atelier Gallery located in Suite #14 at the Greensboro Cultural Center.

The Afro-Latinx diaspora spans latitudes. Latitude refers both to a place and a celestial object in relation to the equatorial mark we humans invented. It is an imaginary line around the globe. It occupies both north and south imaginations. In this series, we are highlighting artworks and practices that engage with the Afro-Latinx expressions in their diversities, expansions, and imaginations.

Participating artists: Miguel Brown, Esperança Gadelha, Matthew Johnson, Gliser Fuentes Mena, Melvin D. Nix, Karen Salinas, Raphael Serrano Disla, María Carolina Tavarez, Leticia Clementia Thomas. Exhibit’s curator and judge: Paula Damasceno.

We invite the community to take part in the Exhibit Opening Reception on September 15th at 6:00 pm to meet the artists and exhibit curator, and to enjoy the exhibit artwork drawing attention to the African influence in Latin America and Latino art and culture. See the calendar of events associated to the Latitudes in Afro-Latinx Art Exhibition.

My ROOTS, MY DREAMS, 2021

In the 2021 Arts Series, Casa Azul of Greensboro partnered with the African American Atelier to present the series: DREAMERS. This was a collaboration exhibit with the Artivists: Rosalia Torres-Weiner, Cornelio Campos and activist Moises Serrano . This event highlighted how art can be a voice and advocate for social justice and create awareness on issues affecting the Latinx community.

Activities included:

  •  An art exhibit from Rosalia's series DREAMERS in which she interviewed dreamers and listened to their stories and then she painted a portrait that reflected her vision of the story and the works of Cornelio Campos.
  • A round table discussion with the featured artists in which they discussed their work and artivism .
  • A screening of the documentary Forbidden and a Q & A by Moises Serrano.
  • A final roundtable discussion with the dreamers that are members of our community.

TALLER GRAFICA POPULAR, 2019

Casa Azul and the African American Atelier joined forces during the summer of 2019 to present “Engraving Injustice”, in collaboration with General Consulate of Mexico in Raleigh. The exhibit featured Taller de Gráfica Popular works, part of an artistic movement in mid-20th Century Mexico. It was one of the most influential and progressive printmaking collectives of its time.

Community discussions held throughout the summer offered an opportunity to dialogue on the events and circumstances surrounding the artwork on display.

INFUSION SERIES, 2017

In the summer of 2017, Casa Azul explored cultural and individual identity through Latin Arts, while looking at the dynamic nature of Latino cultures and the tendency for cultural blending throughout time.

The word “In-Fusion” referred to today’s mix of cultures and how these interact to create rhythms, visual and performing arts.

Activities included:

  • A community discussions and a concert with Che Apalache, a four man string band based in Argentina with members from NC, Mexico and Argentina.
  • A percussion concert in the park highlighted blended music with African and Latin roots.
  • A Mascaras Workshop presented an exploration of identity through mask making.

It was a great summer!
